ONE MORE BOAT I have been building wooden boats for 50 years. Over that span of time I have built about 35 of various shapes and sizes. Around 2010 I built a small 14 ft punt for my twin grandchildren, Jenna and Evan. When it came time to paint the boat, she wanted her half pink and he wanted blue. Well since not too many boats were pink at that time, he won out and the boat was painted blue. Fast forward--- in 2019 I built what I said would be my last boat. She was a 20ft motor boat that I have to say I was very proud of. Due to some health issues it was to be my last one , and with the help of the local heritage and Heritage NL an old fashioned boat launch was planned . Everything went well and it was a great success. We all know what happened it the spring of 2020 and we couldn't have family gatherings anymore. On April 21 it was the twins 16th birthday and they came to our house for a "lawn visit." While she was here, Jenna whispered to me , "Pop, do you think you could build me a small Rodney of my own?" Well now I had something to think about. I was not feeling great and had loudly declared that I had built my last boat. However, knowing I would try anything for my grandchildren, my reply was "Jenna, I don't know if I can, but I do know that I will try." I gathered up some materials and got started shortly after and a very pretty little boat was the result. When she finally realized that the boat was going to be a reality she declared to everyone that this time she would have a pink boat, and it would have a sail like pop has. Over the next few weeks, and with lots of discussions with me and her nan (who was going to help her paint ) Jenna came up with a very unusual and interesting painting scheme, the Newfoundland Tricolour, the pink, white, and green. I was also very impressed when she named the boat after her two great grandmothers, Bennett Isadora.   Submitted By: Edwin Bishop
