The official opening ceremony of the first bridge over Middle Barachois River in Bay St. George took place on Sunday, August 16, 1936. The ceremony was conducted by Reverend E.A. Butler, Anglican Minister and Chairman of the Citizens' Committee, and was followed by an address by Hon. Thomas Lodge, Commissioner of Public Utilities. Mrs. Lodge snipped the ribbon and was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Those participating in the event sang the National Anthem before crossing the gaily decorated 325-foot concrete bridge.
