I thought this might be of interest for your Downhome Magazine.<br /> <br /> In January 1967, my husband, Eric Suley, joined the RCMP. Because January 1st is a holiday, he was asked to be at RCMP Headquarters in Fort Pepperall for the swearing in ceremony at 8:00 AM SHARP on January 2, 1967.<br /> <br /> The reason for this was that Newfoundland would be 1/2 hour ahead of the rest of Canada and they wanted him to be the first Mountie sworn in to begin Canada's second &quot;hundred&quot; years. He was then known as the &quot;Centennial Mountie&quot;. The RCMP planned to have him at Expo '67 in Montreal beginning in July, after 6 months training; however, he was anxious to get out there and do real police work.<br /> <br /> He had 34 years of service in the RCMP, stationed in New Brunswick, followed by 3 years as the Police Liaison Officer for the Province of New Brunswick, before retiring and returning to Newfoundland in 2007.<br /> <br /> Because January 2017 will be the beginning of the 150th year, I thought I would put forward this milestone.<br /> <br /> I have attached 3 pictures (1) his Swearing In ceremony in 1967, (2) as a Staff Sergeant in 2000, and (3) today as an RCMP Vet.   Submitted By: Suzanne Suley
