St. John’s Midget Softball Champions – 1946
Photograph taken Sept. 1946. I hope you can place it in one of your future issues as the 60th anniversary approaches.
My name is Tim Murphy, formerly of 787 Water St. West (now a small parking lot). My father ran a butcher shop there until his death in 1939.
I left St. John's in 1951; I still visit two sisters in St. John's on Waterford Bridge Rd. and Kilbride.
The photo shows Mayor Andrew Carnell presenting a trophy to the winning team of St. John's Midget Softball Championship.
If published, I would like to contact former teamamtes or anybody who is aware of their whereabouts.
Back Row (Left - Right): W. Crummy, Jim Learning, Joe Wadden (Coach), Wally Rose
Front Row (Left - Right): Mayor Carnell, John MacGettigan, Tim Murphy, Cyril Ennis
I know Joe Wadden is deceased. Also, I met Cyril Ennis some years ago, and became friends again. He passed this photo to me before he passed away.
There were others on the team; I only remember two - Joe O'Brien and Tom Sexton.
We all lived in an area bordered by Water St., Hamilton Ave., Leslie St. and Sudbury St. In the middle of this square was Thompson's Field, where, when not in school, we spent most of our free time.
Thompson's Field in those days was also used during winter for bobsledding and skiing (mostly by using barrel staves with cut-up inner tubes for straps). Football (soccer) was popular, with mostly European merchant seamen from the Sudbury hospital playing with us in their pajamas or dressing gowns. Many games of softball, baseball, political discussions (joining Canada, USA, Responsible Government) etc were enjoyed by the girls and boys of many families from the same area: Perlins, Noahs, Maddigans, Foley, Epstein, Kellands, Willanski, Feaver, Thompson, MacGettigan, Walsh, Whitty. Good times and memories of that small neighbourhood on Water St. approximately from Leslie St. to the Crossroads (Waterford/Topsail) were the candy stores, grocery, butcher, veggie, fruit, laundry etc of Mrs. Carew, Mrs. Reddy, Mrs. Voisey, Bambricks, Colfords, Bugdens, Batt Walsh, Keans, Johnnie Brown, McDonald's Fruit, Bert Edwards, Westend Laundry, Byrne's, Breen's plus West End and Gerry McDonald's Taxi Stands - what's that distance on Water St. - about 500 metres!! For me, and, I'm sure, many others, those were the good old days.
Your magazine is thoroughly enjoyed by all the family.
