Roger Fishes
My husband, Roger, and I lived in Morden, Manitoba from June, 1997 'til Dec, 2001. When we moved, my sons, Aaron and Myles, decided to stay there, and about four years ago we went to visit them and my sister, Cathy and her family, who were living in the same small town at the time. While we were there, Cathy’s husband asked Roger and my sons to go fishing the next day. My one son was working and probably wouldn’t have gone anyway as he loves the great outdoors thing as much as I do. Actually none of us are really into the nature scene-a picnic once in a while or a walk in the park with the dog that is afraid of flying insects. So this was a big deal!
The next day off, the three of them went, and this is a very brief account of what I heard from Roger later, as I didn’t think you would print some of the words.
After driving for an hour and a half, they parked the car and walked for about ten or fifteen minutes through bushes before coming to the edge of a lake. They fished from shore for a couple of hours and finally gave up as they had not caught any fish. And, from the trek in and standing in the bush fishing for that length of time, they were all three covered in wood ticks. Even after showering, we found the little creatures in the bed that night and throughout the car the next day. Ewwww!
A few days later my brother-in-law asked again if they wanted to go fishing. Both my sons declined 'big time' but Roger, being a sucker for punishment, said he would go if they had a boat, and just like magic, Brother-in-Law managed to get a little boat from a friend and they were off again. They went back to the same lake and this time they spent about five or six hours there. Roger said it was ‘not too bad.' The difference this time was that they both caught some fish. Roger was quite happy, as he caught the biggest ones. He came back with a twenty-seven and a half inch pickerel and a thirty-six inch pike (picture enclosed). The pike actually was towing the boat around the lake for a while before they brought it onboard! He really did enjoy the experience though he says it isn’t something he wants to do on a regular basis. He does want to go fishing for something big like marlin or swordfish, where you are strapped into a chair so the fish don’t pull you overboard and the fish are bigger than you are. Maybe when we retire.
