Downhomer, this is a story of my Mom and Dad and their wedding, 67 years ago.
Blanche and Dorman Haggett of Leading Tickles, N.L. celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary on March 14, 2010. They have lived in Leading Tickles all of their lives, and back 67 years ago there were no roads just a little isolated community. The nearest place to buy cloths or a pair of shoes was Botwood, which was 20 miles away as the crow's flies. But to get there, you could not fly like a crow, you had to walk which was a two day trip. So my Dad with snow shoes and a pair of ice skates left to walk to Botwood to buy a wedding dress and shoes for my Mom. The winters back then were colder and the ponds would freeze over and with skates he would make better time. So, he walked and skated to Botwood and came back with a beautiful wedding dress and shoes for my Mom the same day. The Reverend used to visit the little outport a couple of times per year back then, and he was suppose be there that weekend and was going to marry my Mom and Dad on that Monday. My Grandmother went to church on Sunday morning and came home and said that the minister informed her that he would not marry during lent; so he would not marry them the next day, but would marry them that night because he didn't consider Sundays as part of lent. They had two hours to get ready for the wedding. Can you imagine that today with the florist, caterer and photographer etc. They had none of that, but still have that love and comittment 67 years and four children later.
