Bookmarks For Haiti
Here is a picture of my girls donating money for Haiti. If you decide to run the picture, the info is below - a piece I wrote that you can use if you choose, any or all, it's obviously up to you.....D
On January 12, 2010, when we were all shocked and saddened by the earthquake that rocked Haiti, the world came together in spirit, in song, in arts and crafts. The money began to pour in from all over the world to help the people of Haiti rebuild what was once home, but now was just miles and miles of rubble and ruin. Governments pledged millions of dollars and sent relief in the form of medical supplies, nurses and doctors, companies sent resources, people and money. The public gave not only money, but they came up with ways to help raise that money. Locally the musicians and arts community got together and put off concerts to raise money in events such as Hearts for Haiti or MUN's From One Island To Another in aid of the Haiti Relief Benefit and globally they took part in telethons such as Hearts for Haiti. Most schools got involved raising money by having bake sales or selling crafts. This inspired many children to go it themselves and wanting to do their part to help the people of Haiti.
Many kids locally did their part by creating items like heart pendants or paper hearts and sold them for cash. My three girls were no different. Molly (9) decided she just had to do her part. For someone who is so young in years, she is very old when it comes to her social (actions). Helping those in need has been dear to her heart since she was old enough to put a penny in the charity can at the local store or drop a coin in a fountain because it would go to help someone less fortunate than she.
Molly is a voracious reader. She will read anything she can get her hands on. With this in mind, she decided, and with her sisters' (Anna and Claire, both 8) help, she wanted to create bookmarks. Together, they cut pieces of foam and decorated them with shapes, letters, glitter, anything that was unique but that would be appealing. Most were decorated with shapes but many had messages like "Help," "Peace," "Love," "Joy" or "Care." Because they wanted to donate the money to the Red Cross, they designed bookmarks that simply read HAITI and RED CROSS. These they gave to the staff at the Red Cross when they dropped off their donation of $151.52 this past Friday, the last day of the federal government's pledge to match public donations.
In the picture supplied, showing off the bookmarks they donated and holding the receipt is (L-R);
