L’Anse Amour’s Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast II
Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 A LIGHTHEARTED TIME AT L'ANSE AMOUR'S LIGHTHOUSE BED AND BREAKFAST What a wonderful thing it is to plan a trip for years and years, then hustle for the last few weeks making sure lodging and transport are all in order - then make a last-minute change that turns out to be the best. Our plan had been to foot passenger from St. Barbe, Newfoundland, to Blanc Sablon, Quebec, and back on the ferry across the Straits of Belle Isle, just to step foot in Quebec and enjoy a few hours of sea voyage on that fabled waterway. When we arrived at St. Barbe, the weather was just so beautiful we decided to take the car across and explore a bit of Labrador. On the ferry we met, just by chance, our new friends, Bob and Yvonne Sward of London, Ontario, whom we had met in St. Mary's on the Avalon Peninsula a few days before. They suggested we stay at the Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast in L'Anse Amour, a place they'd been told was clean and comfortable. We readily agreed, as one of our goals was to climb the lighthouse at Point Amour: the tallest in Atlantic Canada. Touring under sunny skies with light breezes scuffing the waters and gently-moving leaves and grasses was a delight up and down the highway to Red Bay and around the lighthouse. Our climb up to the light surely made us appreciate the dedication of the lighthouse keepers who climbed the stairs at least twice a day to mind the wicks and wind the clockwork 365 days a year. After a well-deserved night's rest, we found ourselves with other guests around the breakfast table along with our hosts, Rita and Cecil Davis, who satisfied our tummies with delicious homemade breads and jellies and filled our memories with stories of L'Anse Amour and her sturdy people. We would love to have the chance to go back and stay again at L'Anse Amour, especially in late spring when a polar bear might be sighted, as well as ice bergs and whales. Till then, we will enjoy our snapshots and memories. Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast's Breakfast table. Clockwise from left, two couples from Newfoundland enjoying an overseas holiday.
