Big Lake Trout

On July 6, 2009, my son Nicholas, his buddy Josh Ramey and I left for Lopstick Structure near Churchill Falls, Labrador for a three day fishing trip. The weather was absolutely beautiful with sunny conditions (approximately 20+ degrees and a little windy to keep away the flies). We went to the cabin, packed away our things and were off to the fishing hole. It didn't take long to realize that there were lots of fish. Nicholas hooked and retained a 72 centimeter fish on the second cast. You can only keep fish over 60 centimeters. Josh caught a huge pike that we released and I caught a couple more lakers that were less than 60 centimeters and were also released. After about an hour, five more of our friends showed up-the Bakers, the Roberts and Pat Casey. They set up their tents and stayed for a couple of nights as well. We decided to try on the other side of the structure. I had a 4 inch Red Devil and made a cast well out into a riptide. I knew it was a big fish as soon as it grabbed the hook. We took turns reeling the big fish in and after approximately 15 minutes we finally landed the fish. We were so proud that the boys jumped up and down and, at one point, I believe, I joined them. We had a couple more casts and managed to hook another monster. He wasn't as big as the first but what excitement! This was the highlight of our trip, but at one point there were people working at the gates of the structure and the water level lowered so much that we were able to hunt for lost lures. The bottom is made up of huge rocks and lots of lures are lost there. We had to move the rocks in some places but we picked up 27. I think some of those lures belonged to our friends who had to make a trip to Churchill Falls to get more. Another time while I was barbecuing hot dogs for our lunch, Nicholas and Josh were out on a point fishing. They can back in quite a hurry telling me the story of how a loon was swimming with his head under water when a big fish grabbed the bird by the head and pulled it under water. Next year we may have to use a decoy with a hook attached for the bigger ones. It was a great trip and I enjoy telling the story.   Submitted By: ford taylor
