Cream of Asparagus Soup

1/4 cup butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large onion, chopped
4 stalks celery, chopped
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
5 cups chicken broth
1 medium potato, peeled and diced
1 lb fresh asparagus,
coarsely chopped
1 cup cream, warmed
1 tbsp soy sauce

Melt butter in heavy pot. Add garlic, onion and celery, and sauté until tender. Stir in flour, mixing well. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add broth and stir until smooth. Bring to a boil. Add potato and asparagus. Reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. Purée soup in a food processor or blender and return to pot. Stir in cream and soy sauce. Bring soup just to a simmer and season to taste.
