Some people say every month, others say once a years is okay. Also does it really help all that much?
If you have a Mac, the operating system takes care of defragmentation for you! On Windows, it's a manual process. How often you should do it depends on how you use your computer. If you install a lot of programs or transfer a lot of files, fragmentation will become more of an issue. Also, if you're low on hard drive space fragmentation is likely to be a worse issue than if you're not.
My recommendation would be to run the Disk Defragmenter program every month or two. It very quickly gives you an overview of how fragmented your hard drive is and if it recommends defragmenting. If it does, you probably should!
